Game Overview

Wonder Boy is one of those classic Sega Master System games that feels simple at first but gets surprisingly deep. You play as Tom-Tom, who’s basically just a dude trying to rescue his girlfriend from some jerk of a forest king. The whole thing plays like a side-scrolling action platformer, but with this weirdly charming mix of fantasy and everyday items—like, you’ll be dodging snakes and spiders one minute, then grabbing a skateboard or chugging milk to regain health the next.

The levels are split into these bite-sized rounds, and each area has its own vibe—jungles, volcanoes, even clouds. The hatchet is your main weapon, but the real fun comes from the eggs scattered everywhere. Crack one open, and you might get a power-up, a skateboard (which is way more fun than it sounds), or… uh, sometimes a literal grim reaper who chases you. That part’s less fun.

There’s also this weirdly specific mini-game where you collect perfume or teddy bears in the sky while avoiding falling. It’s random, but it breaks up the action nicely. And if you’re thorough—like, collect-all-the-hidden-dolls thorough—you’ll unlock a secret tenth area. The whole thing’s got that old-school challenge where you’ll die a lot, but it never feels unfair. Just don’t expect the woodland creatures to go easy on you.
