World Championship Soccer came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the earlier soccer games on the platform, arriving before the more simulation-focused titles that would follow. You control a team of eleven players, moving them down the field to score goals against your opponent. The main objective is simple: win the match. Signature mechanics include a powerful sliding tackle that sends opponents flying without a foul, a turbo button for sudden bursts of speed, and a lofted through-pass for setting up breakaways. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty can spike sharply against better teams, leading to some frantic scrambles in your own penalty area. It feels like a scrappy, unpredictable playground game where anything can happen.
