Play Wrath of the Black Manta (Rev A) Online
Take control of a ninja, throw shurikens, slash with your sword, and learn magic while battling a criminal gang and rescuing kidnapped kids in this NES side-scroller.
Wrath of the Black Manta came out on the NES in 1990, developed by Natsume. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling action games that tried to mix ninja themes with a little bit of storytelling, something you saw more of as the console generation went on. The game doesn't get talked about much now, but it had a certain presence on rental shelves back then.
You control a ninja hunting down a criminal organization that kidnapped children. Movement is screen by screen; you throw shurikens, use a short-range sword slash, and eventually learn ninja magic to attack groups of enemies. The objective is straightforward, beat each stage and defeat the boss, but the platforming feels stiff and some jumps require very precise timing. It's one of those games where the challenge comes more from controlling your character than from clever enemy patterns. Playing it feels like wrestling with the mechanics as much as the enemies on screen.
