Play X-Kaliber 2097 Online
Swing a glowing sword through mutant-packed alleys, then suddenly lock into cinematic duels where every parry and counterattack feels weighty. That weird mix of side-scrolling chaos and fighting game precision still holds up.

X-Kaliber 2097 is one of those SNES games that looked like nothing else at the time—dark, gritty, and weirdly stylish for a 16-bit title. You play as Slash, a rogue agent with a glowing sword in a cyberpunk New York overrun by mutants. The whole thing feels like a mix between a side-scroller and a fighting game, which sounds odd but somehow works.
Most of the time, you're hacking through morphing freaks in dim alleyways, deflecting bullets with your sword (which never gets old). Then suddenly, the camera zooms in for these tense 1-on-1 duels against bosses—think Street Fighter but with way more dramatic pauses. There's even a two-player versus mode if you want to test your swordplay against a friend, though good luck agreeing on who gets to be Slash.
It's got that '90s anime vibe where every character looks like they stepped out of a rejected Akira sequel, and the soundtrack goes harder than it needs to. Not the deepest game, but swinging that X-Kaliber blade still feels satisfying decades later.
