Play X-Men : Mutant Academy Online
Pick your mutant, build up rage, and unleash wild special moves—Wolverine’s berserker slashes feel brutal even on the tiny screen. Toad’s still obnoxious, but beating him unlocks a killer secret character.
X-Men: Mutant Academy on Game Boy Color is a stripped-down but surprisingly fun take on the console fighting game. You’ve got Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, and Gambit squaring off against Magneto’s crew—Toad’s weird hopping attacks are way more annoying here than they should be. The 2D stages are simple, but the rage meter adds some strategy: land enough hits, and you can unleash a screen-filling special move (Wolverine’s berserker slash never gets old).
Story mode’s your basic ladder climb, but beating it unlocks two secret characters—no spoilers, but one’s absolutely worth the grind. The real surprise? Team battles actually work well with the GBC’s two-button setup. Just don’t expect deep combos; this is more about timing and dodging than flashy strings. That link cable versus mode? Still a blast if you’ve got a friend with a copy.
It’s janky in that classic handheld fighter way, but nailing a perfectly timed optic blast on Sabretooth never stops feeling satisfying.
