X Zone came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed and published by Kemco. It was one of those early SNES titles that tried to blend different genres, a strategy game with action elements that stood out for its unusual approach during the console's first few years.
You control a lone pilot navigating grid-based maps from an overhead view, engaging in turn based combat against enemy mechs when you move into their territory. The main goal is to survive each stage by eliminating all hostile units, using terrain for cover and managing your limited ammunition and energy carefully. Combat is deliberate and methodical, requiring you to think several moves ahead, since mistakes are costly and the game doesn't offer much room for error.
