Game Overview

Xenogears is one of those PS1 RPGs that sticks with you—partly because of its wild story, partly because of those clunky-but-cool giant robot fights. You start as Fei, a guy who accidentally pilots a stolen mech (the "Weltall") during an attack on his village, only to trigger a catastrophe that leaves everyone blaming him. The setup’s darker than most RPGs, and it only gets weirder from there.

The combat’s split between regular sword-swinging (with combo inputs that feel almost like a fighting game) and gear battles where fuel management matters more than level grinding. The gears move like tanks—slow, heavy, and satisfying when you land a big hit. Dungeons mix platforming puzzles with random encounters, and yeah, you’ll miss jumps and groan at save points just out of reach. But the story’s the real hook: cults, amnesia, and enough religious symbolism to make your head spin. It’s messy, ambitious, and unlike anything else from that era.

Just don’t expect the second disc to hold your hand—budget cuts turned half of it into a narrated slideshow. Still worth pushing through for the payoff.
