Yokozuna Monogatari came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed and published by KSS. It was part of that wave of mid-90s Japanese sports sims that never really made it overseas, a niche but interesting take on sumo wrestling when the SNES library was full of more familiar action and RPG titles.
You control a young rikishi working his way up the ranks, managing his training, diet, and technique selection between matches. The main goal is to rise through the divisions and eventually earn the title of yokozuna. Key mechanics include choosing specific sumo moves before each bout, like thrusting or belt techniques, and carefully balancing your wrestler's condition so he doesn't get tired or injured. The pace is deliberate, almost methodical, and the difficulty comes from reading your opponent and executing the right move at the right moment. It feels like a thoughtful, hands-on management of a sumo career, not just a button-mashing fighting game.
