Game Overview

I first played Ys III: Wanderers from Ys EasyType on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in the early 90s. It was developed by Nihon Falcom, and this version was a localized and slightly adjusted port of the original Japanese release. At the time, the SNES was full of fantasy adventures, but this one stood out because it broke from the series' overhead view and tried something different.

You control Adol Christin, a red-haired adventurer, as he returns to his homeland only to find it threatened by evil. The main goal is to explore the land of Felghana, fight monsters, and uncover the source of the darkness. The gameplay is side-scrolling action; you move screen by screen, slashing enemies with your sword or using a bow at a distance. Dungeons are a big focus, filled with platforming sections, environmental puzzles, and hidden items to find. The pacing is brisk, and while the EasyType adjustments make it more accessible than some versions, the boss fights still demand quick reflexes and pattern recognition. It feels responsive and direct, with a satisfying flow to the combat and exploration.
