Game Overview

If you've ever played an Ys game before, you know the drill: Adol (that red-haired guy who can't seem to stay out of trouble) stumbles into another ancient mystery, and this time it's in the sprawling forests of Celceta. The SNES version of Ys IV has this weird, almost dreamlike quality—the colors pop in that classic 16-bit way, and the music? Absolute fire. You'll recognize some tunes if you've played other Ys games, but they hit different here.

Combat's simple but satisfying—just ram into enemies at the right angle or blast them with magic when things get messy. What surprised me was how much bigger the world feels compared to earlier games. There are actual towns with people who don’t just spout one-line hints, and the story’s got more weight to it. It’s not perfect (the translation’s a bit rough in spots), but there’s something about the way it all comes together—the exploration, the boss fights, that one track that plays in the desert—that makes it stick in your head. Definitely one of the SNES’s underrated RPGs.
