Game Overview

Yu Yu Hakusho: Tournament Tactics came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2005, developed by Sensory Sweep and published by Atari. It was a time when licensed anime games were plentiful on the handheld, and this one aimed to capture the strategic side of the series' famous Dark Tournament arc.

You control a team of four main characters, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei, moving them across grid-based battle maps. The main objective is to defeat all enemy fighters on each stage using turn-based commands. Key mechanics include positioning your team to avoid area attacks, using each character's unique special moves that have specific ranges and effects, and managing a shared spirit energy pool for those powerful abilities. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful thought before each move, and the difficulty can spike on later stages. It feels like you are actually directing a team battle from the show, where a wrong move can cost you the match.
