Yu Yu Hakusho: Tournament Tactics came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2005, published by Atari. It’s a tactical RPG based on the Dark Tournament arc from the anime, and it fits right in with other mid-2000s handheld games that tried to adapt popular series into turn-based strategy formats. The game doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it does offer a solid, straightforward experience for fans of the show.

You control Yusuke and his team on a grid-based battlefield, moving each character into position and selecting special attacks that play out with brief cut-in animations. The main goal is to defeat all enemy fighters in each stage, using abilities like Hiei’s Dragon of the Darkness Flame or Kurama’s demon plants strategically. Positioning matters a lot; if Kuwabara is left exposed, he can get overwhelmed before he even gets to use his Spirit Sword. The pacing is methodical, and some battles can feel drawn out, but pulling off a well-timed combo or finishing move brings a real sense of satisfaction. It feels like directing your own small-scale version of the anime’s fights.
