Ever wanted to punch demons in the face as Yusuke Urameshi? Yuu Yuu Hakusho – Sunset Fighters on the Genesis is basically that fantasy turned into a chaotic, energy-blast-filled brawler. The second you pick a character—whether it’s Yusuke, Kurama, or the terrifyingly buff Toguro—you’re thrown into fights that feel like they’re straight out of the anime. Hiei’s Dragon of the Darkness Flame actually looks like it’s burning the screen, which is wild for a 16-bit game.
It’s fast, almost too fast at first—you’ll whiff a few punches before realizing how tight the timing is for combos. But once you land that first Spirit Gun or get Kurama’s rose whip to connect just right? Pure satisfaction. The pixel art nails the anime’s style, and the music’s got that crunchy Genesis sound that somehow makes every fight feel even more intense. If you grew up with the show, this is basically nostalgia in cartridge form. If you didn’t? Still a solid fighter with way more personality than most.
Just don’t blame me when you lose three rounds in a row to Botan’s surprisingly cheap aerial moves.
