Yuu Yuu Hakushou DS is one of those rare anime games that actually gets it right. You start off with Yusuke and the gang, jumping straight into spirit detective work—battling demons, solving cases, and pulling off those flashy signature moves from the show. The combat’s got this nice mix of button-mashing and timing-based combos, so it doesn’t just feel like mindless tapping.
What surprised me was how much it leans into the RPG side. Between fights, you’re running around talking to characters, making choices that actually nudge the story in different directions. And yeah, it’s all in Japanese, but if you’ve watched the anime, you’ll recognize enough to get by. The sprite work’s clean, and some of the special attacks look legit ripped from the show.
Fair warning: the difficulty spikes hard around the Dark Tournament arc. You’ll either love that or rage-quit a few times. Either way, it’s way better than most cash-grab anime adaptations.
