Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is one of those weird, wonderful LucasArts adventures where you play as a down-on-his-luck tabloid reporter who stumbles onto an alien conspiracy to dumbify humanity through phone lines. Yeah, it’s as bizarre as it sounds. You’ll team up with a ragtag group—including an anthropologist and her friends—to hop between continents (and even planets) solving puzzles with that classic verb-based interface (no "look" or "talk" here, just "pick up," "give," and so on).
The puzzles can be surprisingly open-ended—some have multiple solutions, and a few are totally optional if you just want to focus on the main story. Switching between characters keeps things interesting, especially when you realize one of them has the item another needs halfway across the world. The FM Towns version looks way sharper with 256 colors, but the original DOS floppy version has its own charm if you’re into retro pixel art. Either way, it’s a trip—literally, since you’ll be flying everywhere from San Francisco to Mars.
Just don’t expect hand-holding. Half the fun is figuring out how to use a telepathic crystal or why a random chicken might be important later.
