Game Overview

I picked up 2003 Crash II Advance on the Game Boy Color, a late release for the system that came out well after the Game Boy Advance had taken over. It was developed by Vicarious Visions, who had a knack for squeezing decent ports onto the GBC. This one tries to capture the feel of the console Crash games on hardware that was already feeling its age.

You control Crash, running, spinning, and jumping through a series of linear stages. The main goal is to get to the end of each level, often while being chased by a giant boulder or avoiding stacks of nitro crates. The signature mechanics are the spin attack to break boxes and defeat enemies, and the belly flop jump to smash certain obstacles. The pacing is frantic in some sections, demanding quick reflexes, while others are more about careful platforming. It feels surprisingly responsive for a handheld conversion of a 3D game, making the action satisfying to execute on the small screen.
