Game Overview

4 Nin Shougi is one of those weird little SNES gems that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s actually a solid take on shogi (Japanese chess) with a twist. Instead of the usual one-on-one matches, you can play with up to four people, either against each other or in teams. The board looks like a mess at first—way more pieces than standard chess—but after a few rounds, you start picking up the flow.

What I like is how it eases you in. There’s a decent tutorial (if you can read Japanese or don’t mind guessing), and the AI isn’t brutal right away. The four-player mode gets chaotic fast, especially when someone forgets which direction their pieces promote. Graphics are simple but clean, and the music’s got that classic SNES charm—kinda relaxing, even when you’re getting wrecked by a surprise promotion. If you’re into board games or just curious about shogi, this one’s worth digging up.
