Play 7th Saga Online
Pick one of seven adventurers, then wander a world where NPCs drop vague hints and dungeons punish you for not grinding enough—the US version’s brutal, but that synth soundtrack makes the pain feel good.

7th Saga on SNES is one of those RPGs that feels like it crawled straight out of the NES era—in a good way. You pick one of seven characters (I went with the knight first, classic mistake) and just... wander. No long cutscenes, no overwrought drama—just towns with cryptic NPCs pointing you toward dungeons and a whole lot of grinding.
The combat’s straightforward turn-based stuff, but enemies hit hard, especially in the US version where they cranked up the difficulty for some reason. You’ll spend half your time backtracking to heal, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about the rhythm of it. And yeah, the translation’s janky ("Go defeat the bad!"), but honestly? It adds charm. The music’s got that classic SNES synth vibe too—haunting in the dungeons, weirdly peppy in towns.
It’s not for everyone, but if you miss RPGs where the world feels big because you’re barely told where to go, this one’s a time capsule worth dusting off.
