Game Overview
If you've ever wanted to feel like a fighter pilot without leaving your couch, Ace Combat X nails that rush. You're thrown right into the cockpit as part of Gryphus Squadron, defending Aurelia against a surprise invasion from their sketchy neighbors. The first mission has you scrambling to intercept bombers before they level your last remaining airbase - and that sense of barely holding on never really lets up.
What surprised me was how much the PSP could handle - the skies look great, and pulling off high-G turns between canyon walls feels surprisingly smooth. You start with a basic F-4, but soon unlock everything from nimble dogfighters to hulking bombers, each with their own handling quirks. I wasted way too much time customizing paint jobs when I should've been practicing missile evasion.
The campaign branches based on which objectives you prioritize mid-mission, so replaying feels different. One run I focused on ground targets, the next I went full ace-hunter. Multiplayer's where it really shines though - nothing beats coordinating with a wingman to ambush human opponents in those tight mountain passes. Just watch out for friendly fire when things get chaotic.
It's one of those PSP games that makes you forget you're holding a handheld. The dogfights feel properly intense, especially when you're down to your last missile with three bandits on your tail.
