I picked up Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception back in 2006, right when the PlayStation Portable was hitting its stride. You take control of a fighter pilot codenamed Gryphus 1, flying missions across the fictional nation of Aurelia to repel an invasion. The main objective is to complete various mission types, from air-to-air dogfights and bomber intercepts to ground attack sorties and naval strikes. Two key mechanics stand out: the Strategic AI System, which alters mission progression and enemy responses based on your success or failure in earlier stages, and the extensive aircraft customization, letting you tweak performance and weapons to suit your style. The pacing is intense but manageable, with difficulty that encourages replayability to unlock better planes and achieve higher ranks. It feels sharp and responsive, putting you right in the cockpit with a real sense of speed and consequence.
