Game Overview
Advance Guardian Heroes is that rare GBA sequel that actually lives up to its Sega Saturn predecessor. It's got the same chaotic, screen-filling brawler action where you're juggling enemies with ridiculous combos while magic effects and particle explosions go off everywhere. The roster's smaller than the original, but each fighter feels distinct—I kept switching between the samurai and the mage because their playstyles were so different.
What surprised me was how well they translated the Saturn's 6-button combat to the GBA's limited controls. You still get guard cancels, aerial recoveries, and all that technical stuff if you want to dig deep. The story mode's got branching paths too, so replaying with different characters actually changes things up. My only gripe? The screen can get way too crowded when four players are spamming special moves at once.
If you ever played the original, this is the closest thing to having it in your pocket.
