Game Overview

Adventure Island II: Aliens in Paradise came out for the Game Boy in 1992, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of early platformers where you expected to spend a lot of time jumping and collecting fruit, but this one had a few twists that made it stand out from the usual run and jump fare on the handheld.

You control Master Higgins, who must rescue his girlfriend Tina from aliens across eight distinct islands. The game plays out screen by screen, with you running, jumping over gaps, and avoiding enemies like snakes and UFOs. You collect fruit to keep your energy from depleting, and you can pick up weapons like stones and fireballs to fight back. One of the best features is taming dinosaurs; each type lets you ride them for unique abilities, like the Pteranodon that lets you fly over tricky sections. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty is fair but requires some memorization. It feels satisfying to slowly master each island and make progress with your dino companions.
