Age of Empires: The Age of Kings came out for the Nintendo DS in 2006, developed by Backbone Entertainment. It was one of the few serious strategy games on the handheld, a time when the DS library was full of touch screen experiments and casual hits. This was a proper, deep turn based strategy game squeezed onto a dual screen cartridge.
You control one of several civilizations, like the Britons or Mongols, moving armies of knights, archers, and siege units across a grid based map. The main goal is to either capture all enemy towns or destroy their castle, which requires careful management of gold, food, and technology. Key mechanics include hero units with special powers and the ability to construct buildings in towns to train new units or upgrade existing ones. The pacing is deliberate, almost chess like, and the AI provides a decent challenge, especially in the later campaign missions. It feels surprisingly complete and thoughtful for a portable adaptation.
