Alex Kidd: High-Tech World is one of those weirdly charming Sega Master System games where you're basically on a time-sensitive scavenger hunt. Alex and his buddies want to hit up the new arcade in town, but—of course—they don’t know where it is. So you’re stuck running around a castle, digging up map pieces while dodging ninjas and solving puzzles. And yes, there’s a clock ticking—if you don’t make it by 5 PM, tough luck.
The castle’s got six floors, including an attic (because where else would you hide arcade directions?), and some floors have phones you can use to call for hints or… order pizza. No joke. The game’s full of little quirks like that—alternate solutions to puzzles, characters who only show up at specific times, and a password system so you don’t have to start over every time. Just don’t rely too much on the demo—it might spoil one of the map pieces for you.
It’s equal parts frustrating and fun, especially when you realize you’ve been running in circles while the clock’s ticking down. Classic Sega.
