Aliens: Thanatos Encounter is basically that one hallway scene from Aliens stretched into a whole Game Boy Color game—in a good way. You pick a marine (I always went for the balanced one, though the speedy guy has his moments), board a derelict ship, and immediately regret it when the motion tracker starts blipping like crazy. The top-down view makes everything feel claustrophobic, especially when facehuggers come skittering out of vents.
You’ve got all the iconic weapons—pulse rifle, flamethrower, even the smartgun—but here’s the catch: if you want to use the motion tracker (and you do), you’re stuck with a pistol in your other hand. Later levels throw acid-spitting xenomorphs at you, which… yeah, that’s as unpleasant as it sounds. Lose all your health, and your marine gets cocooned somewhere—another character has to rescue them before the timer runs out, or they’re gone for good. It’s tense, but finding a power loader (yes, that power loader) feels like cheating in the best way.
Passwords save your progress, because of course they do—this is a Game Boy game. Just don’t expect to sleep well after playing it in the dark.
