Aliens: Thanatos Encounter came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed by Cryo Interactive. It was part of that wave of licensed games trying to capture the feel of a movie on a handheld, back when a lot of developers were still figuring out how to make action work on the small screen. You knew what you were getting: a side-scroller set in the Alien universe, with all the tension that implied.
You control a Colonial Marine moving through the corridors of a infested ship, screen by screen. Your main goal is to survive, rescue any crew, and purge the xenomorphs. The motion tracker is essential; it beeps faster as enemies get closer, forcing you to stop and listen. You switch between weapons like the pulse rifle and flamethrower, managing limited ammo while aliens drop from vents or rush from the sides. It is a methodical, cautious game where rushing means a quick death. Playing it feels like holding your breath in a dark room, waiting for the next blip on the scanner.
