Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, developed by Pocket Studios and published by Infogrames. It was part of a wave of survival horror games trying to bring that tense, atmospheric style to handhelds, though the hardware limitations meant it had to simplify a lot of what made the genre work on consoles.
You play as either Edward Carnby or Aline Cedrac, investigating supernatural events on Shadow Island. The game plays out screen by screen, with fixed camera angles that change as you move between rooms. You explore the mansion and its grounds, picking up keys, documents, and usable items to solve environmental puzzles. Combat is real time but awkward; you aim with the D-pad and fire your weapon, though ammo is scarce and enemies respawn. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty comes from limited resources and some obscure puzzle solutions. It feels claustrophobic and tense, especially when a creature lurches into view with little warning.
