Anarchy 2 is one of those SNES brawlers that slipped under the radar—probably because it came out late in the console’s life—but man, it’s a blast. You pick from a ragtag crew of street fighters (I always went with the boxer) and just start swinging through grimy alleys and neon-lit streets. The punches land with this satisfying thwack, and the enemies actually fight dirty—no polite waiting their turn here.
It’s got that rough, arcadey feel where you’re constantly getting jumped by guys with knives or some hulking brute who takes half your health in one hit. The music’s all crunchy guitar riffs that somehow make getting ganged up on feel cool. Yeah, it’s janky in places—sometimes your special move just whiffs for no reason—but that almost adds to the chaos. Play it with a friend, and it turns into this hilarious mess of elbows, suplexes, and desperate health-item scrambles.
If you’ve worn out your copies of Final Fight or Turtles in Time, this is the kind of hidden gem that’ll scratch that same itch.
