Apprentice came out on the Amiga in 1990 from Rainbow Arts, a time when side-scrolling platformers were everywhere. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it had a certain charm with its colorful graphics and straightforward fantasy setting. You played as a young wizard's apprentice, which felt like a nice change from the usual knights or barbarians.

You guide the apprentice through seventeen levels, jumping across platforms and fighting off monsters with a simple magic attack. The combat is dynamic; you can collect power-ups like leaves that boost your attack or balloons for extra jumps. Exploration is key, with plenty of hidden areas to discover if you're willing to poke around. The difficulty is fair but persistent, especially leading up to the final confrontation with the dragon Fumo. It feels like a solid, well-crafted adventure that respects your time.
