Game Overview

Arcana came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of those early SNES dungeon crawlers that felt a bit experimental, trying to blend card collecting with first-person exploration in a way not many other games on the system were doing at the time.

You control a party of heroes, each represented by a specific card, as you navigate maze-like dungeons from a first-person perspective. Your main goal is to explore these dungeons, fight monsters in turn-based combat, and collect the elemental cards that serve as the game's key items. The combat uses a card-based system where you can summon powerful elemental attacks once you've collected the right cards; fire, for instance, can wipe out multiple enemies before they even act. The pacing is deliberate, and the dungeons can be quite challenging with their traps and dead ends. It feels methodical and a little mysterious, like slowly uncovering a hand-drawn map in an old notebook.
