Game Overview

Archon Ultra came out in 1994 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Free Fall Associates. It was a polished re-release of the original Archon, a game that stood out in its era for blending strategy with arcade-style action, offering something different from the pure turn-based or reflex-driven titles of the time.

You control a set of fantasy units on a grid, like chess, but every encounter plays out in real time. The goal is to either capture all five power points on the board or eliminate every opponent piece. Key mechanics include direct unit control during battles, where a knight might swing its sword or a wizard cast spells, and the board itself changes as light and dark squares shift, altering which side has the terrain advantage. The game moves quickly, with matches often decided by a few critical fights, and it demands both tactical positioning and quick reflexes in combat. It feels tense and unpredictable, where a single mistake can cost you the match.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
