Play Archon Online
Your chess pieces brawl on the board—knights charge, wizards fling spells, and the squares mess with your power. Lose your queen to a lucky pawn and you’ll never underestimate positioning again.

Archon came out in 1983 for MS-DOS, developed by Free Fall Associates. It was one of those games that felt different from everything else at the time, blending strategy with real-time action in a way that wasn't common on home computers. You got a fantasy chessboard, but the pieces fought for control instead of just moving.
You control either the Light or Dark side, moving your units like a wizard, knight, or golem onto contested squares. The main goal is to either capture all five power points on the board or eliminate every enemy piece. When two units enter the same square, the view switches to an arena where you control your piece directly, firing spells or swinging weapons in real time. The board itself is dynamic; light and dark squares shift, affecting your unit's strength. Matches are fast and often tense, decided by both strategy and reflexes. It feels like a hybrid game that keeps you thinking and reacting under pressure.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
