I picked up Astro Boy for the PSP back in 2009, a time when handhelds were really hitting their stride with solid action titles. It was developed by High Voltage Software and published by D3, and it felt right at home on the system, offering a straightforward, energetic experience without trying to overcomplicate things.

You control Astro Boy himself, flying through levels and taking down waves of enemy robots with a mix of punches, laser blasts, and special weapons. The main goal is to progress screen by screen, clearing out enemies and occasionally facing larger bosses. Signature mechanics include switching between melee and ranged attacks on the fly, collecting energy to power up special moves like the Arm Cannon or the infamous Butt Machine Guns, and making use of quick dodges to avoid dense enemy fire. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike during boss fights, but it never feels unfair. Playing it gives you that satisfying rush of controlling a powerful, agile hero who can handle just about anything thrown his way.
