Attack of the Killer Tomatoes came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by Imagineering Inc. It was part of that wave of licensed games that tried to cash in on a weird property, and it definitely stood out on the shelf next to more serious platformers. You could tell right away it wasn't trying to be another Mario or Castlevania; it had its own strange vibe.
You play as a guy in a helicopter, flying over neighborhoods and cityscapes, shooting down tomatoes that bounce and roll toward you. The goal is to clear each screen of enemies before moving on to the next, and you have to manage your fuel and ammo carefully. Some tomatoes split into smaller ones when hit, and you occasionally face giant boss tomatoes that take a lot of firepower to bring down. The pacing is pretty relentless, and the hit detection can be unforgiving, making it tougher than its goofy premise suggests. It feels like a chaotic, slightly janky arcade shooter that never takes itself seriously.
