Backyard Basketball on the DS is basically what happens when you take streetball and shrink it down to kid-sized chaos. You pick from these weirdly charming backyard players—some are tiny, some are lanky, and they all have their own goofy strengths. The controls are simple enough that you’ll be pulling off crossovers and alley-oops within minutes, but there’s a surprising amount of strategy in picking the right team.
The courts are small and packed with obstacles, so you end up bouncing passes off fences or dodging garden gnomes mid-dribble. It’s not exactly NBA Jam, but that’s the charm—it feels like playing pickup games in someone’s overgrown backyard. If you’ve got a friend with another DS, the multiplayer’s where it really shines, especially when you start figuring out which characters combo well together.
