Backyard Football for the Game Boy Advance came out in 2006, a portable version of the series developed by Humongous Entertainment and published by Atari. It arrived late in the GBA's life, offering a simplified, on the go take on the casual football games that were popular at the time.
You control a team of kids, including professional athletes scaled down to child size, moving your chosen player with the D-pad to pass, tackle, or run with the ball. The main objective is to outscore your opponent in a full game of football, calling plays from a limited selection between downs. Signature mechanics include the turbo button for a short burst of speed and special ability cards that can be activated to temporarily boost a player's stats or disrupt the other team. The pacing is quick, with shorter quarters and a straightforward difficulty curve that makes it easy to pick up. It feels like a fast, chaotic game of pickup football you can fit in your pocket.
