Bakugan Battle Brawlers for the Nintendo DS came out in 2009, developed by Now Production. It was part of that wave of tie-in games based on popular anime and toy lines, and it fit right in on the handheld alongside other mid-2000s releases. The game follows the show’s story, putting you in the shoes of a Battle Brawler trying to save Vestroia from the rogue entity Hal-G.

You control a custom character, moving through locations on the top screen and engaging in battles by flicking your Bakugan onto Gate Cards using the stylus. The main goal is to collect Bakugan, upgrade your team, and defeat opponents in turn-based battles that mix strategy with timing-based minigames. You roll your Bakugan onto cards to claim them, then enter battle sequences where you tap, swipe, or shake the DS to execute attacks. The pacing is fairly brisk, with straightforward exploration and predictable enemy encounters, though some boss fights demand quick reflexes. It feels tactile and immediate, especially when you’re physically shaking the system to pull off a special move.
