Battle Garegga came out on the Sega Saturn in 1996, a conversion of the arcade game developed by Raizing and published by Eighting. It arrived during a period when the Saturn was home to a number of excellent, though often brutally difficult, 2D shooters. This one stood out for its unique aesthetic and its reputation, which preceded it.

You pilot one of several propeller-driven fighter planes through horizontally scrolling stages filled with enemy tanks, turrets, and aircraft. Your main objective is simply to survive the onslaught and defeat the boss waiting at the end of each area. Key mechanics include collecting power-up icons to strengthen your main shot and a separate, screen-clearing bomb, as well as deploying option satellites that fire alongside you and can be strategically positioned.
