Beamrider came out in 1983 for the Atari 2600, developed by Activision. It was one of those games that stood out at the time for its clean visuals and methodical pace, a space shooter that felt more strategic than many of its peers.

You pilot a small ship locked onto one of five horizontal beams, moving left and right to dodge waves of alien attackers. Your goal is to clear each sector by destroying all enemies, using weak lasers for smaller foes and saving your three torpedoes per stage for shielded ships or bosses. The challenge comes from managing your limited resources while avoiding accidental shots on valuable extra life pickups. It feels tense and deliberate, demanding careful positioning and timing over rapid fire.
