Beatmania GB: Gotcha Mix 2 is that weird little rhythm game I keep coming back to on my Game Boy Color. The controls take a minute to get used to—you're sliding and tapping to J-pop and techno tracks with just two buttons and the D-pad—but once it clicks, it's stupidly satisfying.
What really hooked me was the "Gotcha" gimmick. Nail a perfect combo and suddenly your song gets interrupted by a dog barking or some ridiculous sound effect. It shouldn't work, but it does. The chiptune versions of Beatmania songs are way catchier than they have any right to be, especially through the GBC's tiny speaker.
It's janky in that very 2000s handheld way, but that's half the charm. I still fire it up when I'm waiting for the bus—the two-minute songs are perfect for quick plays. Just don't blame me when you start humming the menu theme for days.
