Explore the treetops of Green-sky, glide between branches, solve puzzles, collect items, and uncover a hidden conspiracy in this tranquil adventure.
Below the Root came out in 1984 as part of the Windham Classics line, a series of literary adaptations for MS-DOS and other platforms of the era. It was based on Zilpha Keatley Snyder's Green Sky books, and it stood out for its quiet, exploratory tone in a period often dominated by action or arcade-style games.
You control one of several young characters, climbing and gliding through the vast, interconnected trees of Green-sky, a society built entirely in the canopy. Your main goal is to uncover a hidden conspiracy threatening this seemingly idyllic world. Exploration is screen by screen, methodical and non-linear, involving careful use of a gliding cape to travel between branches. You solve environmental puzzles, collect items to aid your progress, and avoid or befriend the strange creatures you meet. The pacing is slow, almost meditative, and the lack of hand-holding means you have to pay close attention to subtle clues. Playing it feels like slowly peeling back the layers of a beautiful but deeply troubled dream.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
