You pick a character and climb through this eerie, floating forest society where everyone’s unnervingly cheerful—until you start finding cracks in their perfect world. The deeper you dig, the more unsettling it gets, especially when you meet the underground folks who actually remember how to feel.

Game Overview
Below the Root is one of those weird, beautiful MS-DOS games that sticks with you. You start as one of five characters from the Green-sky books—this peaceful, tree-dwelling society where everyone’s high on berries and pretending negative emotions don’t exist. But of course, things aren’t that simple.
At first, you’re just hopping between branches, talking to people with that old-school text parser (hope you remember "ask about vision" instead of just "vision"). Then you realize there’s this whole underground society of exiled folks called Erdlings—they’ve got fire, trains, and actual emotions, which freaks the tree people out. The world feels alive in a way most games from that era don’t, with little details like how Kindar kids lose their psychic powers younger every generation.
What’s cool is how much it leans into the books’ themes—you’re not just solving puzzles, you’re navigating this fragile peace between two cultures that literally see each other as monsters. Sometimes you’ll find an item and think "wait, is this helping or making things worse?" The ending’s bittersweet, but it fits. If you like story-heavy adventures with some moral gray areas, this one’s worth digging up.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
