Game Overview
Beowulf - The Game came out on the PlayStation Portable in 2007, developed by Ubisoft. It was one of those mid-2000s action titles that tried to bring a cinematic, slightly gritty feel to the handheld, fitting right in with the era's push for more console-like experiences on the go. The game adapts the epic poem, though it takes plenty of liberties to suit its hack-and-slash style.
You control Beowulf himself, a warrior who grows from a young hero into a seasoned king. The main goal involves battling through various levels, from coastal caves to mead halls, defeating monstrous foes like Grendel and his mother. Signature mechanics include brutal close-quarters combat where you can execute context-sensitive finishing moves, command a small group of thanes in battle, and occasionally engage in quick-time events during boss fights. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some sections feel repetitive, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes clunky brawler that leans heavily on its source material's violent spectacle.
