Big Sky Trooper is one of those weird, charming SNES games that feels like it was dreamed up at 3 AM. You play as a rookie space soldier—though "rookie" is relative, since the game casually hands you a 21-star general rank right off the bat. Turns out Earth’s military standards get pretty loose when the planet’s being invaded by sentient, bone-hating alien slugs.
Your mission? Hop into a clunky FIDO starship (which handles like a shopping cart with rockets) and blast through waves of gooey enemies across space and alien planets. The controls take a minute to get used to—your ship drifts like it’s on ice—but once you get the hang of it, there’s something satisfying about bouncing between gravity fields and dodging slug attacks. The whole thing has this oddball LucasArts vibe, right down to the slugs declaring war on humanity because they mistook a logo for an existential threat.
It’s janky, colorful, and just self-aware enough to be fun. You’ll probably crash into a few asteroids before figuring out the rhythm, but that’s part of the charm.
