Blades of Steel came out on the Game Boy in 1990 from Konami, a time when portable sports games were usually stripped down versions of their console counterparts. This one managed to pack in a surprising amount of the arcade hockey feel into that little green screen.
You control a team of five players, skating up and down the ice trying to score goals. The main objective is simple: win the game. Its signature mechanics are the brutal body checks that send players sprawling and the sudden fights that break out after big hits. Winning a fight gives your team a power play. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly against later teams. It feels like pure, chaotic hockey distilled into its most entertaining parts.
