Play Blades of Steel (Europe) Online

Pixelated hockey chaos where body checks spark fistfights, the announcer yells when gloves drop, and slap shots somehow feel meaty despite the 8-bit sound. Goalies are either brick walls or clueless, and those between-period target shooting minigames never get old.

Game Overview

Blades of Steel came out for the NES in 1990, developed and published by Konami. It was one of the better hockey games on the system at the time, standing out with its arcade style and smooth scrolling. The game felt fast and responsive compared to other sports titles of the era, and it had a certain charm that made it a go-to for quick matches with friends.

You control a team of five players plus a goalie, skating up and down the ice trying to score goals. The main objective is simple: outscore your opponent. Signature mechanics include body checking opponents to start a fight (which you then play out in a one-on-one boxing minigame) and a between-periods shooting gallery where you aim at targets to earn extra points. The pacing is quick, with short periods and constant action, though the computer can be tough on higher difficulties. It feels satisfying to land a hard check, win a fight, and then rip a slap shot into the net.
