Game Overview

Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold came out in 1993 from Apogee Software, right in the thick of the MS-DOS shareware era. It was one of the first games to use the Build engine, the same tech that later powered Duke Nukem 3D, and it tried to push beyond the straightforward shooting of Wolfenstein 3D with more interactive environments and NPCs that weren't just enemies.

You play as Blake Stone, a special agent fighting through a series of science facilities overrun by genetic mutants. Your goal is to stop the evil Dr. Goldfire, moving screen by screen through complex levels full of locked doors, hidden passages, and hostile guards. The game introduced non-hostile scientists who could give you items or information, and you had to manage multiple weapon types and ammo pickups while navigating the maze-like layouts. The pacing is methodical, with a focus on exploration and resource gathering rather than pure speed, and the difficulty comes from unpredictable enemy placements and tight spaces. It feels like a deliberate, sometimes claustrophobic hunt where every corner could hide a threat or a badly needed medkit.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
