Bloody Roar 2 came out in 1999, and I first played it through MAME 0.243. Hudson Soft developed this arcade fighter, which arrived during a time when 3D brawlers were really starting to find their footing. It didn't try to reinvent the genre, but it had a hook that made it stand out in crowded arcades.
You control one of several fighters, each with their own human and beast forms. The main goal is to deplete your opponent's health bar using a mix of standard attacks, special moves, and quick combos. The signature mechanic is the beast gauge; as you take or deal damage, it fills up, letting you transform into a powerful animal like a wolf, mole, or tiger. These transformations boost your strength, unlock new attacks, and can even turn the tide of a close match. Matches are fast and aggressive, with a moderate learning curve that rewards timing and meter management. It feels chaotic and satisfying when you land a full transformation combo just before time runs out.
