Play Sonic the Fighters (Japan) Online
Choose your favorite Sonic character and battle it out in 3D fights, throwing punches and using special moves to take down your opponent in best-of-three rounds.
Sonic the Fighters, released by Sega in 1996 and playable via MAME 0.243, is a 3D fighting game from the tail end of the arcade era. It features a roster of familiar Sonic characters, rendered with chunky, polygonal models that were ambitious for the time but show their age. The game was developed by Sega AM2, known for their work on the Virtua Fighter series, and it carries some of that technical DNA, albeit with a much more cartoonish and simplified approach.
You control one of several Sonic characters, each with a basic moveset of punches, kicks, and special attacks executed with simple directional inputs and button combinations. The main objective is to defeat your opponent in best-of-three rounds, either against the CPU or another player. Signature mechanics include a super meter that builds as you land hits, allowing for a powerful finishing move, and interactive stage elements, like the rotating floor in Dr. Eggman's arena, that can knock fighters off balance. The pacing is fast and a little awkward, with matches that often feel rushed and unpredictable due to the limited move options and sometimes odd hit detection. It feels like a rushed but earnest attempt to bring Sonic into the fighting genre, best enjoyed for its novelty and nostalgic charm rather than its depth.
