Brandish came out on the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Falcom and published by Koei. It was a late release for the system, a time when a lot of developers were experimenting with more complex dungeon crawlers that didn't rely on the usual top-down or side-scrolling views.
You control a fallen warrior named Varik, exploring a vast, multi-level labyrinth from an isometric perspective. The main goal is to survive the dungeon's traps and monsters, ultimately confronting the sorceress Dela who put you there. The signature mechanics involve rotating the entire playing field with the shoulder buttons to see around corners and solve spatial puzzles, along with real-time combat where you must carefully time your sword swings and blocks. The pacing is deliberate, often tense, as you manage limited resources and navigate confusing, trap-filled corridors. It feels like a careful, methodical puzzle where every new room could hide an ambush or a deadly drop.
