Burai Fighter is one of those NES shooters that starts simple and then suddenly throws everything at you. At first, you're just zipping around in a little ship, blasting enemies in classic side-scrolling fashion—but then it flips to top-down, and suddenly you're dodging bullets from all angles. The eight-directional shooting feels surprisingly smooth for an NES game, though good luck remembering which way you're facing when things get chaotic.
You'll pick up weapon upgrades along the way, but don't get too comfortable—those seven Burai bases don't go down easy. The later levels get brutal, with enemy patterns that feel almost unfair until you memorize them. It's got that old-school "throw your controller" difficulty, but in a weirdly satisfying way. Just don't expect to beat it in one sitting unless you've got serious patience (or a turbo controller).
