Burning Rangers came out for the Sega Saturn in 1998, developed by Sonic Team. It arrived late in the Saturn's life, a time when 3D action games were still figuring themselves out, and it stood out immediately for its bright, clean look and its focus on something other than destruction. Instead of fighting aliens or soldiers, you fought fires.

You control one of four rookie firefighters, each with slightly different stats, navigating burning structures to rescue trapped civilians. Your main tool is a laser extinguisher that puts out flames and can also be used to grapple onto certain glowing points for quick traversal. The levels are maze-like and often pitch dark except for the light from fires and your own gear; you rely heavily on audio cues from your commander and the voices of people needing help. The pacing is urgent but not brutally difficult, focused more on exploration and quick reactions than complex combat. It feels like being part of a tightly coordinated emergency crew, where every second and every rescued person matters.
